Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for Wii
I've played a few rounds of golf in my day to know that I'm not meant to pay a lot of money to do it over my life time. The new controller add-on for the Wii, the WiiMotion Plus, that comes bundled with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 put me in a weird position. At first, I wanted to take it right back to the store or sell it on eBay because it reminded me of EXACTLY everything I do wrong in real golf. Then after a good nights sleep, I played it again and realized that this is exactly what I should be playing: a simulation video game.
Seriously, this game mimics everything I do wrong when I swing a real golf club. The physics don't lie. When I contact the ball, the club face is open and I fade the ball to the right. I can see it right there on the screen. I apparently need to close the club head a little more to compensate. This is perfect for me. I'm not out in the ridiculous hot sun, I'm not shagging balls out into the forest, and I'm not spending boat loads of money.
Now what I really want to do is get some of my golfing friends to come and try this out and let me know what they think. Of course, the Wii controller is no golf club grip, but you can adjust enough to realistically expect the same outcome of a swing. But I'm sure within the next couple weeks, some company will come out with a stupid plastic shell that more closely replicates a golf club grip that you can slip the Wiimote into and swing away in complete comfort.
Another thing I was worried about was being able to quit in the middle of 18 holes and be able to jump right back in. Having a newborn baby doesn't leave much time to get through 18 holes unless he's asleep and usually by then I'm too tired. But luckily, I can save anywhere and pick up right where I left off. That's really handy.
I also had to completely turn off the announcers in the game. Commentary would have been fine if they'd at least wait a second or two before announcing how crappy of a job I did hitting the ball. At least wait for the ball to hit the ground!
