One group made the trip from the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg Wednesday.

The group was going up against the home team: Bridgewater Retirement Community.

And the game of choice was Wii bowling.

"It's not really competitive," says VMRC resident Richard Good, team organizer. "We try to see who has the highest score, of course."

"I think it's very fun," says BRC resident Bill Parkins. "Each group seems to have a good time, a good time of camaraderie and friendship."

"The idea is to get people out of their rooms, out of their house," explains BRC organizer Byard Layman. "Give them something to do."

"They have a lot of fun. And I have fun watching them," laughs BRC activities coordinator Lindsay Billhimer.

Each retirement village has its own weekly Wii bowling session. Good says they've been playing at VMRC for about a year. They started at BRC about two months ago, according to Layman.

About a dozen competitors made the trip from Harrisonburg Wednesday, where roughly 15 players were waiting. It marked the second time they faced each other.

"It is addictive," says Layman. "You say you're going to bowl one game, and you end up bowling three or four."

"It takes some getting used to. To let that trigger go at the right time," says Good. "It's a little tough for some people to catch onto it. But once they do, it's simple."

And the players say the Wii bowling gives them a pretty good workout.

"It gives an activity that people wouldn't have otherwise," says Good. "They can't go out and play tennis."

"Emotionally and physically it's great," says Billhimer. "We have people here that can't walk around very, and they can sit and bowl."

"It's just a good experience," says Good. "A good time of getting together with your neighbors and friends."

Parkins adds, "It's just a good time to relax."

  1. The Mental Health ward at Winchester Medical Center has a Wii too. They use it to calm the patients. Jen called me and I had to walk her through setting it up.
