Gaming as an obsesion
Yes, I also agree the industry is taking itself too seriously, but for slightly different reasons. The three major companies think they are above their customers. One right now is having issues with their consoles playing games? I had a NES for centuries before I had problems with a game working. And even then it was an occasional problem. I own a flagship game for that system that will not play, it is clean and scratchless. Poor craftsmanship and they refuse to admit they issues even exist.
Another god in this world recently released a new console that had a less than stellar release. First due to the lack of product to sell, I thought supply and demand was the first thing you learn in economics. Second issue which is the reason it is continuing its lackluster launch is the games themselves. Most of them you can buy for other consoles and the graphics are worth then ten extra dollars you pay for the games, but not the initial four hundred you have to pay is ridiculous. The games that are stand alone to that system don’t create a legitimate reason to purchase the console.
The third company has an imaginative approach. They have created games a little different of the norm, trying to stretch the boundaries a little. With that thought process that have created somewhat of a cult following. The problem with their approach, they are missing the mainstream changes, and also they have lost track on where they came from. Sega relied on Sonic character to carry the console, hopefully they don’t make a similar mistake. Yes every gamer in this world loves that little plumber, because that was where a lot of us blossomed into true gamers. But he cannot hold up an entire industry. They need to spend a little less time revitalizing him and bringing back other great characters. Recreating originals would be a good thing for them since they have been around so long. Why don’t make a modern version of the original, or even there greatest games the FPS’s that we spent many late nights blowing each other up.
On another note EA sports themselves haven’t helped the issue. Every year they put out a group of games that are just a tiny bit better then the last. Come on fellas, can’t you do anything innovative. For one thing the “If it’s in the game” slogan is a bunch of crap. There are a lot of nice features they could add that ARE in the game. EA is like mice wheel. Kids just keep playing and playing, without opening there eyes to see they’re not going anywhere.
So yes just as my counterpart suggests, there will come a point where video games peak, only a few things here and there to raise a little interest. The technology has come to a head, so now the try to sell you on, “Well our machine can do more than play games”. Well what’s the F’n point then. I buy a console to play games. That’s it no more. The only thing I can give Microsoft is being able to listen to your own tracks. But that’s limited to only a few games.
Just like board games and card games, video games will die down. But there will always be a new version of Monopoly to buy or a new series of Magic Cards. Unless the can come with something that requires the hand-eye coordination or can take me and my subconscious away from realty for a while. My heart will long for a good video game waste of time.
